Just a quick straw poll here in the name of personal interest. I'm just curious as to which operating system is the most popular amongst board users. Smile

Obviously, in-poll discussion on operating systems (And their benefits or flaws) is more than welcome. Cool

Note: Following previous experiences on another forum that I won't mention, votes for Mac OS become invalid if they pass the 50 mark! Laughing

My current PC is a windows xp platform.

But once this one dies I will be getting a mac again, far better computers and I love the OS system.

Hail All!

I'll admit that most of the PCs on my network are running Windows XP Professional, and I've found that it's a good OS for the things that I like to do. Also, Windows has very good support for doing everything with the keyboard - Useful for me as I don't really use the mouse for anything other than editing graphics - Which IMO is superior to the support offered in any other OS that I've used. Smile

However, I just don't like the idea of being tied down to one company's proprietry system and would rather use well documented, open-source solutions if I could. It has to be said that if I could use Linux as well as I can use Windows, my whole network would be running SuSE, Ubuntu or PCLinux insted. Cool

Just in case anyone's interested, here's a brief run-down of my network:
(Even if no-one is, it's about time I compiled a network roster for my own use anyway, so I'll do it here! Razz

)

Aragorn:
Athlon64 2.4GHz, 512Mb RAM, 160GB storage, Windows XP Professional SP2.
Main system - Audio/video playback, internet, WoW client, remote network administration, intense computing applications.
Gimli:
Athlon 800MHz, 320Mb RAM, 66Gb storage, Windows XP Professional SP1.
Backup system - Stores copies of data held on Aragorn. Used for chron-jobs, and tasks not possible in SP2.
Legolas:
Pentium III 550MHz, 128Mb RAM, 14Gb storage, Windows XP Professional SP1.
Internet services - Hosts web sites, large files for the web, peer-to-peer applications, WoW patch downloads etc.
Boromir:
Celeron D 400MHz, 140Mb RAM, 25Gb storage, Windows XP Professional SP1.
Satellite/LAN-party system - Used for applications in external locations (Friends houses etc.) or as a loan terminal.
Faramir:
Intel Pentium I 133MHz, 32Mb RAM, 6Gb storage, Windows 98SE.
Legacy services - Host for legacy applications and hardware. Also used for HDD management and ghost applications.
Tom Bombadil:
Nokia 9200 (Presume 80486SX), 512Kb RAM, 256Mb storage, Nokia Communicator OS.
Mobile phone - Supports wireless and Bluetooth networking. Used for obvious purposes plus file transfer, network bridging (WAN-Bluetooth), war-walking etc.
Frodo:
Intel 80386SX, 4Mb RAM, 80Mb storage, MS-DOS 6.20.
General laptop - Used for writing documents and programs on the road or abroad. Synched into network via LPT1 on Faramir, and INTERLNK.EXE for DOS.

Hmmm...I'm rather surprised!

So we don't have anyone here using Windows Vista then? Shocked

I suppose I could understand that in part though...I'm having to use Vista Business on the machine I use at work. Although it's far better than Home Basic, it's still years behind Windows XP Professional for ease of configuration and user-friendliness. Rolling Eyes

(Although in fairness I ought to point out that Windows Vista comes with much better security than XP. Cool

)

I'll bet we do by now (infact i know several people that do), given the last post was October.

I am not using it tho, not until i really need to. B.O.S. as Ryan would say.

So who's got it? So loves it, and who's had all kinds of problems with it?
