Hail all! No, this thread isn't about a horrific incident at Surrey's thrill park...It's a chronicle of Death's visits there during the last "free" Fright Night week. I'll try to keep this as brief as possible, but apologies in advance if it reaches Nemesis Nick proportions!Monday 19th Oct 2009CE:
Didn't reach the park until 15:00 thanks to my alarm not going off, but thankfully still managed to avoid the after school rush. Kicked things off with a ride on Nemesis:Inferno, followed by three very enjoyable rides on Saw and a painful as always spin on ColossusColossal Headache just to concuss my more masochistic side into Oblivion. This was followed with a poke at X:\What's The Point, then I enjoyed some Flying Fish...Although the chips didn't come until much later!
At this point, we come to the excellent Fright Night mazes that I will describe in slightly more detail.
To prevent spoiling it for those who havn't gone yet, I've hidden the reviews behind spoiler buttons.
Se7en:
Spoiler:
This was the first time that I'd done this maze despite it being here during the last Fright Night that I'd attended simply because I always forget about stuff in the arena! Though the start was great in itself - Especially as we had to find our own way out of the initial Blood-spattered padded cell - The rest of the maze wasn't exhibiting nearly as much Gore as I was hoping to see. However it's troth to the film and it's exhibition of the seven Deadly sins was at least accurate and very well executed.
In retrospect, I'm glad that I did this maze first. On the whole, the maze itself seems to me to be more geared towards shocking and unnerving the psyche, as opposed to slamming people into the state of true dread that I truly love to behold...But even though it didn't appeal to me in the same way as some of the other mazes, it's still a damn good attraction and not to be missed IMO!
The Curse:
Spoiler:
Having missed last years Fright Nights, I don't know if this is a new one or not...But even so, it's appearance and setting (Right in the middle of Neptune's Kingdom - The parks waterpark for younger children) meant that I initially mistook it for some kind of private event marquee!
In any case, the maze itself - Themed to be set in the bowels of a ship - Is very nicely themed and well done. There are several parts where sudden environmental effects are triggered using infra-red beams (Fairly visible from the front) and tripping these a second time if ye are at the back of the group is an excellent way to spook the rest of the party further...As is bashing your heels rapidly against the wooden floor whilst no-one else is looking!
Personally - Though I only did it the once - I really like this one, and think it a great addition to the Fright Night repetoire. Not only does it exhibit a healthy amount of Gore for the more Brutal amongst us, it also plays with the mind in the way that a Fright Night maze should. There are also some cute touches - Such as that friendly Goth lass dropping down from the ceiling - That manage to keep even seasoned Fright Night maze veterans like myself on our toes!
Hellgate:
Spoiler:
Some major changes have been made to this one since my last Fright Night visit. Gone are the psychadelic scrawls upon the walls of the corridor (And the accompanying 3D specs), and the "Freaks" that used to walk the halls have been replaced with butlers and Daemons...Transforming this long forgotton section of X:\No Way Out's queue line from a freakshow of colour into a very fitting passage to the deepest bowels of Utgard.
Although the change in theming threw me off quite a bit and I spent half the way around trying to adjust and figure out the new back-story, the theming and atmosphere of this maze is still as good as it always was, if not better. The start of the maze - With it's nice Gothic feel, and friendly butlers ready to tend to thy needs - Made me feel right at home, and the further we came along our gradual decent into Hell the nicer and more enjoyable things became!
I especially like the Purgatory that they have set-up in the final room, and the way that they've removed all of X:\'s theming (Which would be completely out of context now) to ensure that there's nothing "modern" to spoil it all. The Daemon Knight at the end with the steel "Cat o' Twos" is a great touch as well, although I have to say that the actor playing him might want to be a little more careful with his close-up chain work!
The Asylum:
Spoiler:
[Review imbegriffen sein...Bitte warten.]
After doing the mazes and finding Detonator to be down, I managed to grab a night ride on Nemesis:Inferno where the operators were getting everyone into the spirit of things. With one of them having got people to "Oggy" the trains as they arrived, I decided to try it out on the lifthill with some great results. Not only was everyone else on the train oggying along, but even a couple of people on the ground joined in too!
I did try to cram in one final go on The Asylum before park close, but alas they'd shut the queue early and I'd just missed the last group to go in!
The only negative aspect to my day was being the unfortunate victim of pick-pocketing at some point during my visit. Although I was thankful that only my tobacco had been stolen (That can always be replaced) the consequential effects of having to go without a cigarette for over six hours - Not helped by Thorpe charging over £6.00 a pack for taylors and £4.00 for that Gods awful Golden Virginia stuff (Neither of which I could afford) - Were a different kind of Hell in itself! As I plan to visit Thorpe at least three times this week, I'm going to be doing further reports and appending them to this post to keep things tidy. Watch this space for my next report(s)!

I wholeheartly agreed with your views on X:No Way Out

X:What's The Point
I went on this ride on Saturday, having veered away from a ride in the dark after going on The Black Hole at AT back in the 80's where I hurt my neck because I could not see which way I was going to be thrown next, and could not believe what rubbish is was. What is the point in going backwards? and then you go in the darkened room slowly and then stop before moving again, then a little further slowly. With no theme inside it was probably the most disappointing ride I have ever been on.
