I love new coasters but that's really sad. I hate losing all the classics. We slate them off until they get threatened, then we make a pilgrimage to the parks for one last ride on them lol. _________________ www.freewebs.com/big-Stevie-b/

They mention that the trains need replacing, I thought they were only replaced 3 or 4 years ago. Is that not the case?
I hope if it does go that something decent will arrive. I've been waiting for 14 years for a decent new coaster to appear and I'm still waiting. Maybe on Nemmie's 16th birthday they'll add a ride worthy of competing with it. _________________ Marcus

My thoughts exactly.
The rides that Alton have lost since Nemesis was put in were very good rides.
The rides that Alton has put in since Nemesis have been very lame and boring imo.
I used to love going to Alton Towers but just cant be bothered with huge queues for poor rides. The only ride worth going to Alton for is Nemesis. _________________

Maybe they could re-build the corkscrew in the tent previously used for the black hole? Re-engineer it so the cars run backwards too, and they have a new dark ride and completely unique.
(Just a thought - totally impracticable though I'm sure)
And as for the cars - all I know is that when I was there last week they were telling people to take their bags with them and put them under the seats. Surley that was not even possible in the original cars? _________________ Now counting my coasters at http://www.coastercounter.com/bradpeet - which even has the snails |

This seems to be be a sad day but something I was waiting for. The first day at Alton when Rita opened I met up with James (One of Park Managers). He told me that Corkey had 3 to 5 yrs left and it will be gone.
I think his words were it was past its sell by date now
We can only hope for something better but with limited height can we get that at Alton. _________________ El Toro My 200th coaster and first USA coaster (Also member of roll back club on TTD 2)

Does this mean it's going to be scrapped, or just relocated to some tacky sea side park
Hmmm My PMBO track is getting a little lonely in the back garden
Will be sad to see it go, personally. _________________ Don't look at me, I'm just Human

The cars as far as I no had just a refurb with them and and not the whole train replaced. The big one trains a few years ago had a revamp with white bars etc underneath them and things added to them. It will be sad not to hear that noise of it going up the lifthill ever again _________________ Naked roller coaster world record holder 2004

Ah yes the side ways crucnh as it hit the top of the hill! I doubt personally if they would replace it with a coaster just because of how crowded it already looks. Just my feeling. Maybe this is where the long rumoured shoot the chutes will go?? _________________ Steve

I cant see it being replaced by a coaster myself either. We were told last year on the BTS tour that Alton is now concentrating on the family market for the time being.
Yay to more lame rides _________________

A little sad at it's passing - Remembering back to when you'd have to queue up for hours just to ride it (much like the Black Hole) when it first launched.
I can understand from a business viewpoint why AT would want to create more family orientated rides, but I hope they don't completely forget about the coaster fans and white-knuckle thrill seekers!
Did I hear mention (albeit some time ago) that they might be extending towards the back of the park? (to counter the complaints from locals about noise etc..?) _________________ [Sir_LANs-a-lot] |

I can still see a coaster going in though. Imho a 1.2 m height restricted coaster would fit with the family theme and could be a great replacement for Old Corky. I think that would also fit a small woody as well.
Lets hope they do something good or it could end up with 1 coaster like X Sector and is lame area now. _________________ El Toro My 200th coaster and first USA coaster (Also member of roll back club on TTD 2)

A "Wicked Twister" would fit really snugly into that corkscrew footprint I reckon...

It's a shame that it is going considering it is one of Alton's classic rides, so was the black Hole is it was one of the best rides there.
Hopefully they will replace the Corkscrew with a better ride or coaster.
They could do with something like a Screaming Swing or simular ride like they have at Thorpe. |

I've always loved the Corkscrew and it will be very sad for me to see it go. Despite it being rough, it's actually one of favourite rides at Alton because it was one of the first "thrilling" roller coasters I rode, and I have a lot of great memories of it.
If they replace it, I really think it should replaced with a family coaster. Something a bit more thrilling than the Runaway Mine Train, but not as thrilling as, say, Spinball Whizzer. That's what the park needs in my opinion. Another thrill coaster isn't needed. |

A large coaster will be hard in that area, but a family fun coaster could work. I haven't ridden it but everyones been raving about Troublesome Trucks, prehaps something on that sacel. Who knows. _________________ Steve

You mean Forbidden Valley?
I'm not sure an Impulse launch coaster would be allowed anywhere in the park, un less you buried it deeper then Nemesis. _________________ Don't look at me, I'm just Human

I am not sure any UK park would pay for how much it costs to launch it every single time sadly. _________________

It's also far too low throughput for Alton Towers. I'm surprised Cedar Point got it. But I guess because, unlike Alton, they have lots of decent rides it means the queues are more spread out and not concentrated on the one ride.
I've just found out that Intamin have sold 2 more of their Mega-Lite Coasters, clones of Kawasemi at Tobu Zoo and Piraten at Djur Sommerland. Both of these new ones are to be installed during 2009, I wonder if one could be heading for Alton Towers. At a height of 108 feet perhaps with some digging they could keep it below the tree line. It would be a great family replacement for Corkscrew as Piraten is proving not too be too fearsome to attract the more timid riders. _________________ Marcus

They have those things quite often from what I remeber to gauge what peoples reactions would be to various ideas. It could be that all or none of those come to life.
Looking at the third picture there seems to be a coaster with another vertical drop, so maybe they have signed a 2 coaster deal for Eurofighters? _________________ Steve

Another Euro Fight would be cool I would not have to travel miles to ride one. But have you also noticed the name Thunder Rock that could be a good name change for Ug Land.
Also thinking on it a Euro Fighter would fit in well in that corner of the park.I still think They need more flat rides as well. Alton seem to limit that side of things it seems. _________________ El Toro My 200th coaster and first USA coaster (Also member of roll back club on TTD 2)

They should forget the Robocoaster idea. Again it just seems too low a throughput and given past history would probably just end up as an up charge.
Going by the look they appear to be after with the robo coaster they should go with a couple of Huss Jump2's instead. Better throughput and in my opinion are far better ride experience.
Of course we don't know if the artwork is genuine, but I hope it is and some part of it comes to fruition. I particularly liked the broken track themeing on one of the coasters. _________________ Marcus
