Sushi

What does everybody think of Sushi ?

I think sushi is amazing and i would have it everyday if i had the chance. It is also very good for you!

My favorite sushi has to be Nigiri, especially prawn.
Nimmykins

I love sushi. I've got sushi rice at home and I've had a go at making hotomaki and futomaki with cucumber and peppers.

During the early summer I was really getting into Japanese food and started making bento boxes with various items bought on eBay.
Now we're in winter I'm reverting to soup mode, but I will probably make some onigri and maybe some inari nigri. I have the tofu pockets and everything.

Auntie, maybe you and I should meet in London one weekend and have Japanese.

Note - sushi means 'with rice'. Wink

I'm a vegetarian, so I don't eat fish. You can still eat sushi.
It's sashimi which is raw fish.
Auntie Murial

like nimmykins said in her post, Sushi means " with rice " and is no reference to raw fish like many people believe it is!

Alot of Sushi does include Raw Fish ( Sashimi ) , but this is actually less than 50% of the total product market, there are plenty of vegetarian options also on the market aswell as cooked fish too.

Yes Nimmy we should do that one day, i would enjoy that very much!

Nimmy have you ever tried Ramen?

Ian

Ive never had it! I only really eat cod or haddock, it doesnt really appeal to me! That would probably be one of the last things I would try!

I adore ramen. I make my own at home. Paul bought me the Wagamama cook book for my birthday. I was involved in the reformulation of Wagamama's Saian Soba ramen, as so many vegetarians complained it wasn't as nice as Moyashi Soba. There's a few places where I like the ramen.

I'm also very into teriyaki don. There's a great Japanese cafe down Brewer Street, just up the road from the Picadilly Theatre. They do a fantastic tofu omlette on rice.

You've got me on my favourite subject.

I don't like or dislike it really, as I've never tried it. I'm not a fish lover so probably never will but never say never.
Nimmykins

Why does everyone assume it's fish, even though Ian and I have said it's not? Surprised
bluea61

Sorry didn't really read eerything. Skim read and posted.

Interesting though, Adam doesn't like fish...... Very Happy

We have a Wagamama in Reading Nimmy, in the Oracle. Just down from where we had a Pizza Hut that long time ago.

Sashimi is raw fish. Sushi means 'with rice' and can be egg, tofu, cucumber, avocado, pepper, mushroom etc.

In sushi the rice is seasoned with Mirin.

I don't eat fish either.
Auntie Murial

I have just had another sushi set that i bought from the Waitrose where i work, and it was the best one i have tried yet !

It was the Akashi Suhshi set made by Taiko Sushi.

It is the most expensive set that we sell retailing at £9.99, but as they say, you pay for what you get.

This is a fish and vegetable based set, it included Raw Salmon trout, Raw Salmon, Cooked scallops, Cooked Prawns, Raw tuna, Salmon Roe, Cucumber ,Avocado Pear, Tamago ( Sweet Egg ) and Seaweed. Served with Soy sauce, Wasabi and Pickled Ginger.

If you are interested in Sushi this is definitly one that is not to be missed.

I must try the wrap made with Tomago
Auntie Murial

It is wonderful, very tasty and light on the pallet.
Bunnie

I've never tried sushi so can't say either way whether I like it or dislike it.

I like fish but need to be in the right mood to eat it.

Why not try veggie sushi to start with?
Paul H.

As bizarre as it may seem I know someone , that presented with a Sushi Fish portion was prepared to eat the fish but leave the rice....is there a name for this type of person...apart from strange that is!

Hail All! Twisted Evil
I must admit that I like sushi as well...Although no matter where I go it's always overpriced. Even the Tesco and Sainsburys ones are too much for too little if ye ask me! Sad
(And ye do NOT want to know what the prices were when I last visited a Yo! Sushi... Rolling Eyes)

I can understand that sushi is hand made an all, but I once made a platefull of *HUGE* Makis along with some Nigiris (Made of the leftover rice) and only spent about £2.50 on Tesco value lines for all of the raw ingredients! Cool

Colin,
The reason most reastaurant charge more for their sushi than you can buy in supermarkets is quite simple, overheads. Ask yourself the following:
How much does it cost for your lights at home?, how much did it cost you in time and effort to get to the suppermarket?, how much in time and effort did it cost you to make the sushi? what about the utensiles you made it with, the plate you ate it off and the cost of washing it up, drying it and putting it away?
Now tell me it is cheaper to make your own.
