We may all be making arrangements for SAW-Ted and/or the Blackpool Bash which will be taking place this month and next, but let's look ahead to another annual event: The Summer Bash. Where and when will this year's Summer Bash be?  The last five years it's been at the following places: 2004: Funland Hayling Island 2005: Funland Hayling Island (my first ever Club trip, having joined March 2005) 2006: Paultons Park 2007: Adventure Island, Southend-on-Sea 2008: Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach Why does that always seem to be kept under wraps till well after Easter?  In 2007 I first saw details mentioned on the Club Site proper late Aprill, but last year it was some time into May that Andy Hine put details on this forum.  I notice it tends to take place late June or early July. From 2004 to 2007, we always seemed to have the Summer Bash somewhere that had just opened a brand new (or new second-hand) ride. 2004: Freefall tower at Funland 2005: Klondyke (ex-Drayton Manor) at Funland 2006: Cobra at Paultons Park 2007: Rage at Adventure Island, Southend-on-Sea Last year broke that "tradition" in that we went to Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach.  No new rides there last year (to the best of my knowledge) but, so I was led to believe, we went there to mark the Club's 20th anniversary year as that was one of the first places the Club ever visited. Where would you like this year's Summer Bash to be?  I supose at the end of the day, Nev decides the date and venue, but maybe if we all start posting suggestions here, that might (possibly) influence his decision. The last two years, the Summer Bash has taken place Southend-on-Sea and Great Yarmouth.  Both are served by National Express East Anglia trains (formerly One Railway).  Great Yarmouth is well in the ITV Anglia region and I think you can just about get ITV Anglia in Southend.  Great Yarmouth is definitely in East Anglia, it's questionable as to whether or not Southend is in East Anglia.  The point I'm making is that, after two years of being in that part of the UK, I think this year, we ought to have the Summer Bash somewhere else, e.g. back on the south coast like it was 2004-06, or somewhere totally different. This year Paultons s opening a new Disk-o-Coaster.  I'd like to see the RCCGB hold the Summer Bash at Paultons, so that we can have an ERS on Disk-o-Coaster.  Furthermore Paultons is a convenient place for me to visit on a weekend, no need for me to stay away two nights at a guest house like I did in Great Yarmouth last year.   Just one thing I envy about an ERS on Disk-o-Coaster (I've mentioned this somewhere else on the Messageboard): how re-ridable will Disk-o-Coaster be?  If it's like Disko at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach, will multiple goes on it in an hour long ERS make me and several other ride members sick and/or giddy?  For comparison, I managed eight goes on Roller Coaster at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach during the Summer Bash ERS last year, with no ill effects, but one go at a time was enough for me on Disko.  No way could I have had four let alone eight goes on GYPB Disko.  Obviously the only way to find out what Paultons Disk-o-Coaster will be like will be to ride it. Another venue I know about is Brean Leisure Park.  I've seen their leaflets and adverts, but not studied their leaflets, and not looked at their website.  Also I've never been there myself, despite it being in my area ("historic" Somerset, former HTV West region)  Someone in Bath told me they've got some good coasters. So that's two suggestions: Paultons for an ERS on Disk-o-Coaster (subject to it being re-ridable enough for that) and Brean Leisure Park. Andy Hine MBE Hi Thank you Nemesis Nick for your analytical suggestions for the Summer Bash!   As you correctly say they are usually chosen based on the fact that the park has opened a new attraction (either new or second hand).  And usually a smaller family run park that we can help  support and raise the profile of.  Last years Summer Bash to Great Yarmouth was purely as it was one of the first parks we visited back in 1988 and as such I wanted to re-live the event during our 20th anniversary. The venue for this years Summer Bash is hopefully Flamingo Land which is in the Yorkshire TV region and may have an optional ‘meet at the park’ add on for Lightwater Valley on the Sunday (also in the Yorkshire TV region).  Obviously Flamingo Land has been chosen due to the addition of the new coaster Mumbo Jumbo.  Plus since our last visit there they have also added, Kumali and Velocity.   If work permits I may add a ‘Family Fun Day’ at a park on the south coast (now the Meridian TV region).  This will be casual trip – more of a I’ll give you the date and we’ll meet there!  I’ll give more details if I can secure time off! For now though we are less than 3 weeks away from SAW-TED (ITV London) so send off your applications and of course this is followed in April by our famous Blackpool Bash (Part of the Granada TV region).  Don’t miss this event – especially as an act I have for the Gong Show will leave you crying for more – or just crying! Then Mega-GLOW-Mania (Wales TV & S4C) in August and Looapthon in October (part of the Central TV area). Then the possibility of a meet in Las Vegas Vacation in November (KTNV part of the ABC Network, KLAS part of CBS Network, KVVU part of Fox TV Network , KVBC part of NBC Network).  This trip will be a make your own way to Vegas, choosing your own flights and hotels, but on certain days we’ll meet at the coaster venues in Las Vegas!  (I was hoping to plan it as a proper USA trip, but the dollar rate is too volatile at the moment!). Magic I'm unhappy about this topic as it is showing unfair advertising of the ITV regions. ITV has made it clear it doesn't care about the regions any more as they recently reduced their regional news service. Meridian was 3 individual regions and is now one giant region, people living in Bournemouth get to find out all about news happening in Dover (nearly 4 hours away). The ITV region I use to work with has been obliterated and no longer exists with most of my colleagues and friends made redundant. In total 17 regions have been cut back to 9 with 430 jobs lost. Therefore don't promote their regions instead promote the BBC regions who seem committed to expanding and enhancing their regional output. Edge at Paultons Park will be just a sickly as a normal Disko and maybe more so with the inclusion of the bunny hill. I've only ridden normal Diskos and Avatar the Last Airbender (junior Disko Coaster) so can only guess at this moment in time. So I don't think it would be too good for an ERS as a lot of people would only manage a couple of goes. But a family day to Paultons would be good and shows that the club is supporting their continued commitment to expanding their portfolio of family rides. I know they enjoyed the clubs last visit and would love to see us come back again.  Oh and don't forget their new water sprayground is also bound to entertain a few club members. As it happens, the Summer Bash is indeed going to be in a different part of the UK to the last two years (one of my wishes fulfilled), and Nev is hoping it will be at Flamingo Land in Yorkshire.  When are we likely to hear concrete confirmation that it will be Flamingo Land (as opposed to anywhere else), and a definite date (as opposed to just "July" as was quoted in the Jan/Feb 2009 issue of AIRtime)? Whether or not I'll attend that is difficult to say at this stage.  Yorkshire is a long way for me to go from Bath for a weekend (then again, Blackpool is just as far from Bath).  However this may influence where I spend my own main summer holiday this year.  I may possibly choose to have a four to seven night holiday in Yorkshire around Flamingo Land. For a moment, I wondered what you meant by "Edge".  I've checked out the Paultons Park website, and Edge is the official name for their new Disk-o-Coaster that I've been suggesting we have an ERS on were we to do the Summer Bash there.  As for Edge being "just a sickly as a normal Disko", I have pointed out a few times on this Messageboard "how re-ridable will Disk-o-Coaster (Edge) be?", and compared it to my experience of Disko at GYPB last June.  I've noticed that Edge has a minimum height of 1.2 metres and minimum age 6 years, whereas Cobra is minimum height 1.1 metres, minimum age 4 years. Another possible option would be Legoland as I have never been there before, although it is really for younger children, but it would be nice for the ones who are not tall enough to join in the ERS's. Coaster Police We went to Paultons a couple of years go (for the launch of the Cobra Coaster), and we went to Hayling island before that (for the launch of the re-located Klondike), so both of those parks have been visited recently. Disk-O-Coaster - I went on an identical ride in Europe last year, and it was OK and very smooth, not sickly at all or fast come to that, just smooth and OK, I don't think personally it has the excitment factor that would entertain an ERS, but then I like Roller Coasters. Also other than the Cobra, the coasters at Paultons are mainly Kiddie orientated (i'm not knocking the Park - i think what they do there is great) Both Paultons (which I drive past everyday to work) and Hayling Island (Funland if you want me to be precise!) are a short journey for me (30 and 50 miles respectively (not exact to the nearest tenth of a mile)), however, I'm very happy with Flamingo Land as a chosen destination, especially as you also have Lightwater Valley not far away in Ripon, thus, 2 excellent parks with excellent rides = brilliant weekend. (Random Question)   There are club members scattered all accross the UK, and i'm sure many of them are really pleased about the bash being further north (I know one that is). We've just been lucky recently that some parks have been south coast based. As i said a moment ago, I am well pleased with this, as i've wanted a summer bash at FL or LV for along time.   Finally, whats the urgency with the dates? The Summer Bash has historically been announced later on in the year. It's a simple weekend, not 2 weeks in the USA. I know Nev is working hard to get things sorted, and as soon as they are, he will announce it on the message board, it's not like a secret or anything, just no point giving out flase or speculative  information, may as wait till things are confirmed. That's true, but we had the Summer Bash at Funland Hayling Island two years running: 2004 and 2005.  I accept that Nev is hoping to hold this year's Summer Bash at Flamingo Land.  What I had in mind was doing Funland, or preferably Paultons for Nev's proposed Family Fun Day on the south coast which may (or may not) happen. N.B. At the time of the 2004 Summer Bash, I'd never heard of the RCCGB.  In fact I was on holiday in Cornwall at the time of the 2004 Summer Bash.  I first heard about the RCCGB mid September 2004, and joined March 2005, so the 2005 Summer Bash was my first ever Club trip. As for repeated visits, we go to Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Oakwood, Alton Towers and Drayton Manor Park every year regular. You mean the one in Europe was exactly the same design as Edge at Paultons?  How many times could you ride it without feeling sick, giddy or getting a headache?  I haven't been on one like that yet.  My experience of Disko style rides is the Ramba Zamba at Adventure Island (Summer Bash 2007) and Disko at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach (Summer Bash 2008).  Once at a time on Ramba Zamba and Disko GYPB was enough for me, and at present that's the only experience I'm predicting Paultons' Edge to be like.  If Ramba Zamba or Disko (GYPB) are anything to go by, I have wondered if Edge at Paultons will be something you can comfortably ride just once, or twice if you're lucky.  I first saw the promotional notice for Disk-o-Coaster (now to be called Edge) when I last visited Paultons last October.  When I posted my report here the next day, I then suggested having the 2009 Summer Bash at Paultons with ERS on what's now called Edge, but did point out I was concerned about its re-ridability. Traditionally the summer bash is at the end of june/early july (and using the logic that we don't get back from the USA trip until 21st June (British Airways), it's not going to be 27th) - so just keep those weekends free I hear what you say, but wouldn't it be nice to have the dates for all this year's Club trips now, from Saw-Ted in March through to Loopathon in October?  It's handy being able to stick them in your diary so you can plan your own activities around Club trips.  For example, the last four years, I've planned my annual summer holiday in Cornwall to avoid clashing with the Summer Bash.  This year though, I may consider taking my main summer holiday in Yorkshire for a change, to incorporate the Summer Bash at Flamingo Land, plus other attractions (e.g. castles, gardens) around the area.  It depends what else around there takes my fancy. The RCCGB held a Family Fun Day at Legoland Windsor on 22 May 2004, and had an ERS on their then new coaster: Jungle Coaster.  I've found this information from the 2004/05 Yearbook. Rogue I'm chuffed as chips that the summer bash will be at Flamingoland with a follow on at Lightwater Valley. The last time I visited Flamingoland was at the end of August 2006 so I imagine the park has changed considerably since then, I just hope that nasty ride (the one like Evolution at Great Yarmouth) has been removed, imagine having an ERS on that, what a head rush that would be! Yes, it would be nice to have all the dates in advance due to having to work Saturdays (I know several club members with the same circumstances) however these events take a great deal of planning so may not be forecast so easily. Typically the Blackpool Bash is mid April, Summer Bash is end of June/beginning of July, Oakwood the second weekend in August and Loopathon at the start of October. If you are planning a holiday around the time of the Summer Bash, sometimes it is better to book the accommodation last minute as you can get some really good deals. With regard to Disko style rides, like Coaster Police, I too have found them to be quite smooth. Generally I can re-ride these as I am a huge fan of "spinny" rides, particularly the Waltzers. There are some fab little parks around the country that would be impossible for the RCCGB to cover in the space of a year. If there are parks you would like to visit I recommend going with a small group of friends as it provides a similar atmosphere to what you would get on a club trip. Brean Leisure Park isn't very good; it's basicly an over-priced fun fair with a standard Pinfari coaster and a Wild Mouse. mophead I vote for an ERS on the skate karts... and then the ultimate - the ride might be a tad painful side (so is falling off at the bottom of the skate kart hill!) but the station's fantastic. Everything about Flamingo Land is fantastic apart from the staff. Lets hope they change this with the new coaster. NB I don't watch regional tv... I agree with you about Brean Leisure Park as I went there twice last year and it is very overpriced which meant that Icould only go on a certain number of rides, whereas with Flamingoland you only pay once then all the rides are free !,  I have been there too and they have added a lot more rides eversince. But the Summer Bash is at Flamingo Land, not Lightwater Valley I think the general concensus is that they are so close together geographically, that it makes sense to make a whole weekend of it and do the Sunday at LV ourselves (i.e. non-organised), unless it's such a popular plan Nev gets time to arrange something, but i'm not sure there's anything official out about it yet. To be honest, I don't really mind where we end up having the Summer Bash...As long as those of us without cars get enough prior notice of a confirmed event so that we can avail ourselves of cheaper rail fares and hotel rooms! When is the Summer Bash likely to be confirmed, as a matter of interest? I'm trying the new approach this year of buying my train tickets and hotel rooms as soon as I can afford them (Preferably several months in advance) to try and avoid last years scenario which led to me missing Loopathon for the first time in eight years!
