I should be there, just waiting confirmation from my m8 whether he can come.

Also, is it sane to be more excited about riding Megafobia than passing my HND?

Are you aware it's just a field?
Also we collect £5 for each person camping as a donation to cover Oakwood's costs.
Rogue

It's MORE than just a field if it rains  Wink
chewie

If it rains, its the wrecker of cars field.

I suggest to anybody who is driving to take 4 pieces of wood to put under your wheels. Just to avoid the risk of being pulled out of the field by mad 4x4 drivers (Backwards), at high speed, if the inevitable (RAIN) happens.

Public announcement over!!!

Personally, I'm going to stick to my usual approach to avoid getting stuck in the mud at sOakwood...I'll be coming to Oakwood in my other car! Cool

...For those who don't realise, my "other car" to Oakwood normally takes the form of a BR Class 166 to Reading, a Class 43 to Cardiff, and then a Class 143 to Clunderwen. Once there, it's a short and comfortable eight-mile walk to the park. I did it last year and it were awesome...And I didn't have to worry about that tricky Chinese art of "Ka Pa King" either! Twisted Evil

Q: How do you get two Whales in a mini?
A: Drive down the M4... Rolling EyesLaughing

--- Old post above / New post below: ---

I've literally just dropped my trip form and cheque in t'post, and it should hopefully arrive at the RCCGB drop for tomorrow mourning...So once I've managed to get a half reasonabubble train fare there, that'll be me confirmed! Very Happy

Nev: I didn't realise just how cheap and thin my current batch of envelopes was until I got one out for the trip form, so I had to add a privacy insert made out of an old Lidl flyer as well. Rest assured, there is a trip form and payment in that envelope...But ye may have to search for it a little! Laughing

Farewell for now...And see ye all at sOakwood! Twisted Evil

Edit: Double-post prevention system.

Yes I am aware it is in a field (i've seen the pics from last year).

Is there any sepecific time we need to arrive at the park as i won't be able to get there any earlier than 6?

Mozza, I think it's usually anytime after 2pm so I'm sure after 6 would be fine. Just follow the barbeque smoke  Very Happy

I think i'm gonna be camping out too, and it's gonna be my first time (oo er Matron), and i don't reckon i'll be able to arrive until about 10pm-ish, and at the moment i don't even have a tent = could prove an interesting camping experience for me then!! Laughing

You could try and work on the principle of my university canoe club. This is an extract from their kit list for camping:

Tent/Sleeping Bag/Roll Mat (or the ability to pull someone who has)

I normally bring a few creature comforts with me for camping (Those normally being a tent and a sleeping bag) but if I fall behind with the packing again, a stout bin liner and a toothbrush is all I should need... Shocked

Aye...There are some advantages to being naturally geared towards dwelling within arboreal realms - And one of those advantages lies in knowing that nature can provide virtually anything ye may need, if ye don't mind hunting it out! Twisted Evil
Auntie Murial & Nimmy: As I get very little time for e-mailing nowadays, could ye please allocate me a small space on the campsite - Preferably at the Northern edge of the field again if possible? I'll be bringing the same kind of tent as I had last year and arriving on foot again, so I won't need much space, and park security should be able to recognise me by now! Laughing
Cheers in advance! Twisted Evil

Nay...That's Ryan H's space, and I don't want to be invading it! ShockedLaughingWink

My usual reserved spot is that comfy ledge underneath the approach to Nemesis's vertical loop (Right above the waterfall of Blood Twisted Evil) but it's siting is rather impractical for MegaGLOWmania, alas... Confused

I like staying in lofty places though, so any available trusses in Megafobia's lifthill structure should do me just fine. The additional benefit of course is that the ERSs'll be on my front doorstep, and the test trains'll double up as my alarm clock! Laughing

Yes - I have arranged a "3 for 2" offer.

HEATHERTONS
SUNDAY 9th August
Show your trip badge and/or membership card and get 15% off any credit pass.

Plus, at the request of quite a few of you I have arranged an EGS (exclusive go-kart session) at Heathertons.  From 10.30am-11.30am (on Sunday 9th) I have rented the whole track and all the karts!  These are not sea-side karts, they are proper 40mph race karts (see previous Yearbooks for pictures).  The cost for the EGS will be around £10 per person (depending on numbers), but there is a maximum number of 20. So if you are interested please e-mail me (andy@rccgb.co.uk) with the subject KARTING and I'll send you more details.

I've e-mailed my camp booking request in just now, so hopefully that'll be me sorted. Smile

Whilst I'm at it though, could I please make a small request that the camping pass is made available in additional formats alongside the usual Microsoft Word and/or Publisher ones? I (And possibly others) don't have access to the MS Office suite at all, and in previous years I've had to take the old camping pass from 2006CE and amend it by hand! Shocked

From what I can remember of the camping pass design, it would be possible to reproduce it as a GIF image less than 10Kb in size (The GIF format compresses white space, text and repeating patterns very well) or possibly even smaller with some hand-coded optimisations.
Knowing the GIF format quite well and having experience in building images by hand, I can assist with this if necessary. Smile

Just a thought.

The rain we had the best week and today and possibly tomorrow how fun will it be to get on the field next weekend and how muddy will it be already.

Dunno if anyone can confirm this but is the alternative club not there this weekend?

Is there any chance that if it is muddy, can we leave our cars on the hardstanding next to the field, just to save a repeat of last year?

From what I know, the hard-standing next to the field is the staff car-park. As we're mainly allowed to camp there because we're out of the way of the park and it's operations, I would imagine that we won't be able to use that hard standing at all as priority would go to staff vehicles. Idea

If there is space available for one or two member vehicles, then I'd suggest it be reserved primarily for any disabled members, who would be much worse affected if their vehicle was bogged down. Smile

For everyone else, what I would suggest is - If the campsite layout allows it - Trying to park as close to the northern edge of the field as possible, as that side is higher, dryer and firmer than the southern edge. Also, the slope might allow vehicles to be rolled out in neutral under their own momentum, which would not only get cars out easily, but more importantly would reduce damage caused to the field, as well. Smile

For everyone coming by car, I would strongly suggest bringing some stout pieces of wood (Hardwood, Oak and Pine would probabally be best - Avoid chipboard and MDF at all costs!) and old hessian post sacks to put under the wheels.
The wood should distribute the weight of each wheel over a greater surface area and reduce the risk of sinkage, and the postal sack will provide valuable traction against the ground should sinkage occur. Smile

Afterthought: Actually, it would probabally be better and much easier for everyone involved if we kept cars off of the field full-stop. Exclamation
Nev/Nimmy/Ian: Would it be possible for us to use a small portion of the coach park for car parking? It's literally only 100yds away from the campsite (Which isn't too far to walk) and not only would it save us having to borrow the tractor and chop-up the field like we did last year, it would also give us a lot more free space to set up camp! IdeaCool

I've just done a brief search on Google for a long range forcast, and found the following links: Although I cannot vouch for "weather" or not (Rolling Eyes) this site is accurate, at time of posting it suggests that next weekend should be sunny with a little bit of cloud.
I'd suggest using the BBC Weather site closer to the time though, as they've got a better reputation for accuracy. Remember though that the Met Office don't, so it could still go either way! Wink

Reports from the other club are that the park is pretty dead, just 10 minute queue on fobia at peak afternoon time. Park closing at 6pm, no fireworks, and their ERS is 8-9pm...no dark riding.

The ERS was scheduled to be 10pm in the dark, but apparently the park cancelled it as they didn't want the park staff hanging around for 4 hours...so hope the park don't let the club down in the same way next week!

David.
krusty_the_clown

Im sure that Nev's relationship with the park will mean that our ERS will go ahead 9PM-10PM as planned.

especially as they wouldnt want to upset such a large group

Hope the ERS does go ahead bout that time as even at 9 it is still light. There was a name or someone who I havent seen on there before its someone who normaly stays in a 5 star hotel name ends in Hine  Surprised
David Ellis

It appears that the park may have backed down, as the latest news I had tonight on Facebook is that they might be riding right through to 11pm non-stop.

Hopefully the park recognises the value of looking after enthusiast groups who have patronised the park and spread the good word over the years?

David.

Update - Apparently the 'Fobia ERS ran from approx 7.45pm to 9.30pm, so hopefully all will be well next weekend..
coaster-andy

I am not surprised by the way the park is at the moment. The park seemed so dead when I went to do the charity ride. I was expecting more. I was wondering how the ers would work with it now closing at 6pm. Time will tell if Oakwood works with clubs to make them feel welcome as they have in the past.

When i was there at the back end of June, the park was dead, and it was one of the hottest days of the year. Bounce was down, they just running 1 car on Speed (Running much rougher usual) and Meggy went down at 3.30ish and never ran again that day.

I really like the park, i hope the new owners do something special to pull in the punters. Of course it could just be the recesion, and people saving their penny's.

Well, I have to admit that - Being my usual lazy self - I havn't even started packing yet! Shocked Thankfully all I really need is a tent, sleeping bag, a few changes of clothes and a toothbrush...So five minutes tomorrow is all that I ought to need! Cool

Nimmykins: Many, many thanks for sending out the camping passes and suchlike in a web-browser format! Smile
Can I just double-check that the camping pass is about 1/3rd of a page in size and quite basic looking? I have had a look at my script blockers and other anti-malware software to double-check that nothing's being blocked, but I still have a niggling feeling that what I'm seeing might not be the whole pass.
Whatever happens though, I'll print it out and bring it all the same as security'll be able to check my name and membership card against the list and verify me that way if need be. Smile

Also...I saw what ye said about the contact number and I'll bear that in mind. However if it looks like I'll be arriving after reasonable hours (After 21:00) I'll send a single SMS just to let ye know where I've got to, assuming that I decide to take a 'phone with me. Don't worry, I'll be arriving on site as quietly as possible. Cool

Anyhow...I'd better start looking at train timetables and getting ready for my journey tomorrow, which - If First Late Western are the same as they were in previous years - Will probabally be via either Taunton or Gloucester again! Laughing

Farewell for now, and be seeing most of ye at the camp tomorrow night! Twisted Evil

Here's a few extra notes:

We can park in the coach park - if we can stick to the side closest to the field (which will be easier for  anyway) then depending on number of cars everyone should be able to leave the cars there all day as well - makes it a bit easier for you all.

Oakwood have night security and they will have the camping list and will keep the top gate unlocked until everyone is in - the latch will probably be over the gate but it won't be locked.

Cooking things (barbecue) unless you want to wait until the park's open for breakfast (after ERS) and will eat on the way on Friday.

Always bring toilet roll. Better to be safe than sorry.

Bring what you would take camping.

Wouldn't it be 110mph Cyffordd Twnell Hafren i Abertawe (Severn Tunnel Junction to Swansea)?

N.B. If on a First Great Western HST I doubt you'll stop at Severn Tunnel Junction.

Oooo i'm just so excited now - feel like a little kid that won't be able to sleep before xmas day! Gonna struggle to concentrate at work in the morning.
Got my booze packed though! And a loo roll - nothing else really matters!!  Very Happy

Ei...Gwasanaeth gwybodaeth i da! Someone has evidently been reading my threads on RailUK recently! Very Happy

Ahh...I only said Twnell Hafren, there was no Cyffordd in there! Wink

Mind ye though, I can never understand the 40mph limit in the Severn Tunnel at all - The only time that limit doesn't really affect one's journey is if the train is booked to call at Bristol Parkway. Take the Severn Tunnel restriction out, and it'd be 15 minutes quicker getting to Casnewydd! Very Happy

Worth packing?...
  • Food     <-- Couple of supa-noodles ought to be enough. All of the meat for the BBQ can be hunted locally! Twisted Evil
  • Alcohol     <-- With my finances like they are at the moment? I'll be going "dry" again this year, I'm afraid...
  • Waterproofs     <-- C'mon...It's only a little bit o' water! Very Happy
  • Sun tan cream     <-- Makes sense with this weekends weather forecast. Now, where did I put that bottle of factor 750?
  • Fold away chair     <-- Good idea...I'm coming in on fGWR, and there's no such thing as a "free" seat on their trains... Laughing
  • Loo roll     <-- Will a trade pack of value sandpaper be alright? Shocked
  • Wet wipes     <-- ...Or alternatively, just leave one of thy bog rolls out overnight!
  • Sleeping bag     <-- Packed, but I'm planning to sleep under the stars if it's cold enough! Cool
  • Air bed     <-- Eh?...This is a camp in a Welsh field, not a Princess Cruise! Razz
  • Pump for air bed     <-- I would, but all I have is a 500-bar compressor. Probabally wouldn't be a good idea!
  • Spare pegs     <-- A good stake is always handy to have around if any chavs turn up! Twisted Evil
  • Did I mention alcohol?     <-- Ahh...But ye aren't rostered to drive 3H26 over 250 miles on Sunday, are ye? Wink

Speak for thyself...I'm still packing my rucksack! Laughing

As it is, I didn't get up until 12:00 today. Thus, I'll probabally not drop off until about 04:00, though I still want to be up by 08:00, and on the 13:30 train if at all possible! Mind ye though, I still have a good four hours worth of stuff to be done tomorrow morning. This'll be another close one, I fear... Shocked

Farewell for now, see most of ye tomorrow, and many thanks to Nimmy and Ianto for doing all of the campsite related work! Twisted Evil

this is doing my head in. We have been on the road for 2 hours and still have 228 miles to go. This is because the M25 has been closed for 4 hours this morning and we spent lots of time in traffic jams.
