Mobiles directory enquiriesI heard about this on the radio a few weeks ago.... Although I don't think people can get access to your number. Done both of mine.Subject: Mobile phone numbers on directory Subject: Mobile phone numbers on directory You may or may not be aware that from early next week all UK mobiles will be on a directory which means that anyone will be able to access your number for the payment of a small fee. This means that you and all your friends and family who have UK mobiles could get unwanted calls. If you do not wish to be on this list you must unsubscribe - It is easy to unsubscribe but it must be done before the beginning of next week to make sure that you are ex directory. I did this yesterday as it is very easy to do and only takes a minute. . . and its NOT a scam!!
Well worth doing as the last thing you want is being cold called by annoying sales people to YOUR mobile. Grrrrr. Cheers Spanners

It seems my mobile is not in their database as performing a search on their website does not find me (no charge for that). Going ex-dir seems wise although to do that I have to tell them what my mobile is and I'm not sure it's a good idea giving them such info in the first place. | ||

This is a UK based company regulated by Ofcom.
When you opt out you only give your number. That alone is no use to anyone. Companies get that by guessing (although they aren't supposed to). Frosty do you not trust the BBC

I'm always amazed that with all this data protection legislation companies can find ways to do what they do - we should have to opt in to services rather than out. |

My mobile number is already Telephone Preference Service (TPS) registered, so if they ring my number unsolicited then I believe they will be committing an offence. Not sure if this database has been verified against the TPS lists though? You would think so, but I am not sure.

Well, I just tried to go on there to register my mobile numbers (As I have three mobiles - One for general use, two for "disposable" use at festivals etc.) only to find that the site is down as the service is - Interestingly enough - "Suspended" at the moment. I wonder why?...
Once it's back up and running, I'll get my mobiles registered though. I did hear a while ago that there would be a removal charge for such requests...But if they try to ching me a single penny for carrying out my orders relating to my personal information, they'll be finding themselves frog-marched to Ofcom at Chainsaw-point!
Following a very interesting article on dealing with cold-callers in the latest issue of 2600 Magazine, I'm currently building a list of the unsolicited calls that I do still receive, and - If/once I've got the necessary documentation together - I'm planning to invoice each company a non-negotiable standard charge of about £500,- per offence (Reduced to £300,- if paid within 14 days) with notification of intent to persue through the small claims court if payment is not received within thirty days. 
Lawfully speaking, one has every right to control what types of calls that they do and do not receive on their telephone line, and therefore everyone has the right to levy such charges for any calls received that breach their phone line policies. Of course, this applies to anyone with a connected telephone line...And though a lot of companies will try to fob ye off with red tape, they'll eventually break under pressure. Whilst I'm on the subject: I'd advise people against using the Silent CallGuard service. I signed up to this a while ago, and although there may be a few companies that have obeyed my presence upon that list, most of them have simply set their system to dial 141 before calling my number, meaning that not only do I still get the nusance call, but I can't identify them with Caller Display either.
