Earthquake in UK

About 10 minutes about the whole of my house shuck like hell and woke everyone up and my friend in nottingham had one too....

Anyone else feel it....

Hail Kirk! Twisted Evil
Nothing noticed down here in Farnborough mate, but I was thrashing like a wild thing earlier this morning (I've bought a load of truly ace Metal CDs back from Germany with me! Twisted Evil) so that might have something to do with it. LaughingWink

Anyhow...BBC website only has it on the breaking news ticker, but knowing them there should be something substantial on it in the next hour or so. Looks like Nature's starting to give us a bit of the Japan treatment...Well, we do deserve it I suppose after all of our pollution... Smile
Later edit: (Sorry, but I really want to keep this post count - I've repeated this up here to ensure people see it! Twisted Evil )
The BBC web page linked to below has been extensively updated with more information about the event. They are also asking anyone who felt the quake (And even those who didn't) to complete the survey at http://www.earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk to help with their studies of seismic activity, which could help deal with earthquakes and their aftermath in the future. Smile

Also, I have a possible explanation for why we didn't feel it in Farnborough:
The ground around here is mostly composed of sand or clay for quite some depth, and this could have "cushioned" the area from any shocks or seismic movement occurring further below ground, and I've posted this in the BGS survery that I completed. ShockedSmile

Just went on the government earthquake website it measured 4.7 and centred 15 miles northeast of Lincoln in the town of wragby

I was just speaking to Matt from the coaster Police and he was dancing to that Ukraine song. Think that may have been the cause?

As long as it was not anywhere important then!  Laughing

Our Government and Met Office have an earthquake monitoring site? Shocked

I knew that we got a fair few tremours in the mid-Atlantic (That's why the waves in Cornwall are so good for surfing! Cool) but aside from a 0.85 tiddler last year in the Home Counties, we havn't had an earthquake on land here for a good few thousand years or so! Shocked

Either that, or one of us in this country has seriously annoyed the mighty Thor somehow... Confused

Edit: I'm in the mood for more thrashing, and I've just started listening to Finntroll's "Trollhammeran" again...Prepare for another one, 7.50+, centered around the Cove/Farnborough area! ShockedLaughingTwisted Evil

We felt it at 1.00 in Grimsby (North East Lincolnshire).  Although the kids have managed to sleep through it.  Very scary.

Hail again! Twisted Evil
Well, the BBC now has a stub up for the story, available at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7266136.stm...Makes quite interesting reading if ye ask me! ShockedSmile

What's scary? The earthquake...Or the fact that your children remained asleep? Very Happy

Actually it's about only 25 years since we last had an earthquake of this size. The guy from the British Geological Survey (who ironically was in Scotland) who was just on BBC Breakfast News said historically the UK is hit by this size of earthquake roughly every 30 years. So it is a relatively common occurence, just most of us on here are too young to remember the last one.

It's being reported on BBC South Breakfast that it was felt in Newbury which isn't too far from you. Specifically a local MP said his chair started moving about and he felt giddy.

This would have been the same earthquake centred near Lincoln, there's only been the one actual quake but the force of it would have been felt for miles around. Small after shocks may continue to happen throughout the day.

Yep was down here to in Gloucester. Throught I was dreaming as the last one no beleaved me till they saw it on the news but yep felt the lot this time.

I cant believe I slept through this one  Laughing
Bunnie

I slept through this one too.

My parents who live in the next town were woken up because their windows were shaking.

I remember one about 5 years ago that had an epicentre in Dudley, I think that one was quite high on the Richter scale. It sounded like someone had driven a lorry through our house.
Coaster Toaster

I was still up and awake at this time as was with the lads player poker in the kitchen but none of us felt it what so ever, but a friend of ours who is quite close in another block did feel it
oblivion

I was in bed and it started shaking a bit so i got up and a couple of things in the room were shaking. It was over really quickly though. I thought we had a poltergiest paying us a visit lol.

I felt it in Lowestoft, Suffolk. My computer desk started to vibrate. I told Susan that my desk was vibrating - she said I must have had too much beer (I had drunk half a pint!). She was convinced I was making it up, as she was sitting just feet from me and didn't feel it. Just before we went to bed at 2.30am, I looked on the BBC news website and saw the Breaking News. I called Susan over to my computer and told her that I wasn't going crazy after all.

It was 5.2 on the Richter Scale, epicentre 4km north of Market Rasen in Lincolnshire. I have filled in the survey on the site linked earlier in this thread. No damage locally, but I was pleased I experienced it...Susan said the earth didn't move for her!

David.

I missed it. The one time it happens and I sleep through it. Not happy  Mad
