Well, that's certainly an interesting (And unexpected) tax-break that could help a lot of low paid workers, especially those inside fast food resturants and similar industries! Cool

Assuming that I return to work again at some point soon, I wonder if I could reclaim the tax on my bus and rail fares for commuting into work...And/or possibly a Government "bonus" because I'll have chosen to use public transport insted of clogging up the road with a car? Very Happy

As an interesting side-bar: Did ye know that a lot of soft drinks like Irn Bru and Lucozade (Which I'd class as food items) are subject to VAT, but newspapers are not? Shocked

That's handy to know, recently been given BBC polo shirts to wear when out on OB's wonder if they class as uniform. Handy info for nurses too, although I feel their uniforms should be washed by the hospital in a bid to aid infection control.

Technically Irn Bru and Lucosade are luxury food items and therefore are liable to VAT. Basic food items like bread, milk, water, fruit etc. are exempt from VAT.

Newspapers fall under the same category as books and are also VAT exempt and always have been.

You can not claim the tax back on your travel expense to and from your place of employment. Had you been allowed to every worker would have done so.

Yes magic you would think they would want nurses uniforms to be cleaned in the hospitals but there are just to many health care workers in the hospitals to have uniforms washed.

also there aren't enough places to change in the hospitals, but I am sure they will bring in a another policy of some kind for this to change!
