CLUB WEBSITE

Due to health reasons, the current Club webmaster (Norm) is currently not able to look after the website as he would like.   As such I am looking for a member to takeover the task.  You will need to understand websites and how to update them, change them, etc., etc.  (and have some free time to do it.)

If you are interested please send me a PM or e-mail (andy@rccgb.co.uk)

Thanks

Hi all,

I have recently been appointed by Nev to get the website up to date, and it won't be long now until you see some updates  Laughing

On top of that, there is also a 'new' site under development as I type with a fresh new look and feel, bringing us up to date and in line with modern web site development techniques!

So watch this space !

Hi All,

Quick update for you......

Things are progressing along well with the new site. I will be posting an update on the homepage of the current site this evening so the site is up-to-date with developments.

As the new site progresses, I will looking for a few willing volunteer's to help me check it for typo's, bad links etc. Hopefully there won't be many issues, but when you are staring at the same thing for hours, you become blind to it  Shocked I'll post more on this nearer the time.

And that's about it for now, just letting you know what's going on really.

A few quick thank you's as well to: Norman Mercer, Andy Huckle and Andy Sheppard for your help so far with providing me with information/images etc. that i need  Mr. Green

Hi all!

Another Update for you.......

We're on Track ! (No, not a track walk!!)

All being well, the new RCCGB website will be live with you all next week!

Our target live-date is "Just after Loopathon 2008", so i'm working towards Tuesday 07 October. All is well, and the new look site is nearing completion. There are still a few small bits to finish, but it's over 95% there now.

Testing is now underway (Thanks Bunnie) as my typing can be flakey sometimes when staring at the screen for ages. Your typo patrol, link checking, and other reviewing is invaluable.

There may be a short period of downtime during the migration to the new site, but i'll change the main homepage during this time. I don't expect it to take too long. And just incase, i'll be backing up the old site incase of any unforseen issues!

Anyway, look at the time!!! I have to sleep, do some work, finish the site tomorrow and then get to Loopathon!

Look forward to seeing you all over the weekend!

Hi all...

Another update... at 02:00 on Friday morning whilst copying the new site to the laptop to take to loopathon, I have found a reasonably major problem with a component of the new site.

There is a bug in Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 5 & 6 that prevents some of the code from working propely - this means the menu's won't work, and some blocks of the page are displayed in the wrong place.

Clearly not an ideal situation and i'm very annoyed.

Therefore, i'm working very hard to re-do some of the code and update the site accordingly in order to support IE6. It's a pain as IE7 is out, and IE8 is in beta already - because of this, Microsoft won't release a fix for the bug. However, as approx 50% of you probably still use IE6, i feel abliged to re-code it.

I'm not sure of the delay to the new launch (not more than a day or two), but i'll try and keep it to a minimum and get the site live ASAP.

I'll keep updates posted to here.

Thanks,
Matt.
bradpeet

I can sure understand why you are annoyed Matt.

I hope I can speak for everybody when I say I appreciate all the hard work you are putting into this - and that I would rather wait a little longer for a quality site, than to have a new site which does not work properly.
Happy Helen

That is the best way to wait a little longer for a better website rather than have a website that does not work.

I do appreciate the hard work that you have done.

Can't wait to see it.

Helen.
frosty

Thanks Matt for all the effort put into the new web site.

Likewise we found that IE6 had issues with menu's on web pages but as we still have some older Win 2K PC's we had to install firefox as IE7 is XP only - as you would expect.
Coaster Police

Update : Wednesday 08 October @ 01:09

So then.... i've now re-coded all the menu's and have tested them with IE6 and they all work now which is good.

I've also been tweaking all the code around the layout of the pages to get round another CSS bug in IE6 that was causing problems when divisions overlap, thus making the page totally out of alignment and look stupid.

I havn't quite finished yet, but the majority is done - alas, i need to sleep now. I'll have it finished tomorrow evening tho, so it'll be ready for final testing. If all goes well..... expect to see the new site Thursday (fingers crossed)!

I'll keep you updated as things progress!

Thanx
Nimmykins

Update : Thursday 09 October @ 01:53

Well, i've finished!! YAY!!!

All the code is re-done, all the layout is re-done. So now the site will work with IE6. Thanks go to Microsoft for providing me with such entertainment during the last 2 days Sad

I've checked all the pages for errors, i've had loads of help from Bunnie checking for typo's, links, fonts and all sorts - so i am confident that there won't be many errors.

Anyway, i've started the upload process to the live server. So far it's taken over 4 hours to upload just the AIRtime and Yearbook images. However, there are over 1500 images, so i didn't expect it to be quick.

The rest of the uploading will be quick -  but i need to do a bit more testing tomorrow before i do anything drastic and release the new version, but folks... it's imminent now! Smile

If all goes well, it will appear at some point tomorrow. It needs to, because.... 1) I said it would be, and more importantly 2) I am going to go and have lots of beer on Friday evening!

Anyway, I will let you know when it goes live (or doesn't!)

Time for zzzzzzzzzzzz's

Hi All!!!!

Many thanks for all the great comments that have been left here over the last week or so!

I am really pleased that you all love the new site and format - it makes the effort all worth while when things are received favorably.

Anyhow, things havn't stopped by any means.... any regulars to the site will notice small changes here and there as it's still progressing.

Since the launch, the following updates have been made...

Ski Trip information now on Trips 2009 Page
Meet the Crew Profiles Updated to those who supplied me info - more coming this week
New Ski Trip Logo added to Ski Trip Info
New look & design Membership form
    Loopathon Trip Report Now Available
Loopathon Trip report link added to homepage
Other tweaks to make things look better, or correct typos
New Pages not live yet - but coming soon!!

In the background, we also have a few 'special' Club Logo's coming for the site, to celebrate certain calendar events.... so make sure you visit the site on Halloween, Bonfire Night, Christmas etc Smile (and we're not trying to copy google!  Shocked )

Anyway, once again - many thanks to Andy Huckle who's been working hard on the new graphics for the Logo's and Dave Perry for the Loopathon trip report, and his work on all the other reports that he'll soon be doing.

Dave being the official club photographer will be responsible for the trip reports pages and pictures contained therein, however we want members to actually write the reports. We have set up a new email address for trip reports, and Dave will be posting a note on here soon for help as he re-creates all the club trips on the website going back over the years.

Finally, thanks again for all the great comments - i'll do my best to keep up the hard work and bring you a website that you're proud of.

Matt

P.S. One of the new pages coming is called (for now at least) 'Website Waffle' - this will be a page (under the Miscellaneous menu) where I can announce updates on the site, let you know whats happeneing, and have an update log so 'at-a-glance' you'll be able to see whats new. I'll post more when this is ready!
amigasat

Thanks Matt

I have posted requests elsewhere on the message board but i'm looking for trip reports from club members to use on the site and will also take into consideration any photo's you have too as I can't be everywhere! and some of you are bound to get that magic moment which'll be great for the site.

Due to work restrictions I can't make every club trip so need your help here.

Stephen Frost has sent me some great pics from this year's Summer Bash which I couldn't attend but I would also like a trip report to go with them. If you have anything for me then please get in touch. You can e-mail me at trips@rccgb.co.uk with any reports and photo's.

Your help is appreciated.

There are no plans for this on the new site as profiles can be handled through Facebook.

Dave
stevencaine

I think a members profile page like on the old site would be a good idea not everyone uses facebook Wink
Coaster Police

Hi there,

When we took the decision to remove the members profile section of the site, it was due to several reasons.

Firstly, the section is terribly difficult and time consuming to maintain, and keep up to date. The nature of our site does not provide for user logins, therefore all maintenance would have to be done by myself by exchanging info, pictures and all updates to every member by email. As you will all hopefully agree, noone wants out-of-date info displayed.

Secondly, there are all sorts of rules and regulations regarding storage of Personal Information, and Data Protection etc. Although we could have designed the page to not include the information effected, and made adequate disclaimers, it's an area that would also absorb time in regulation small print.

And thirdly, with the advent of Social Networking sites, such as FaceBook, MySpace etc. it is very easy for members and users (if they want their profile information displaying), to set it up and join the Official RCCGB Facebook group to do just this function. This way, the updating, content and most importantly Privacy settings are managed and maintained by the member in question.

I hope you find these reasons acceptable. I appreciate that some members may miss this area, but when I last looked at it before I took the old site down, it was terribly out of date and didn't do itself justice.

While i'm here, can I point out to all Facebook users an excellent article that has been put together by Sophos - one of the leading anti-virus suppliers, that will help you configure your Facebook Profile security settings to help avoid being a victim of identity theft due to default weak settings. These settings help lock down your information away from random strangers, but doesn't prevent you from being sociable with your friends/groups etc.

This article can be found at : http://www.sophos.com/security/best-practice/facebook-profile.html

Thanks,
Matt.

I updated the website yesterday with the report from last year's USA Trip. Just before that I posted the Blackpool Bash 2008 Report so if anyone who is planning on going this year and hasn't been to a bash before then take a look at the fun you have in store!!

The Summer Bash 2008 report will be next thanks to material supplied by Steve Frost & Oakwood will follow soon and then i'll make a start on uploading some fun photo's from previous year's trips.

I'm hoping to be able to do LIVE reports for the USA Trip this year in conjunction with my own site, so plenty of new material coming soon.....Watch This Space!

Dave

P.S. If you'd like to see some of your photo's make the club's website then please forward them to me at trips@rccgb.co.uk I'm looking for some great shots from last year's Camp Oakmud!! I can't use all of them but will give every consideration to all of them received.
