I have to congratulate you on the 3 planed events next year Andy. But have to question the charity?
With Lupus and Muscular Dystrophy i saw a real reason to raise money for the charity and did so on the Megafobia event this year.
However, Diabetes is something which people get help anyway from the NHS. It`s not like Cancer Research where they are looking for a cure for a disease or even Mcmillan where you are supporting the help given.
People with diabetes have it for life and will automatically receive help from there hospitals and doctors. So with the charity i don`t get it. Respect to raising money for others but is it as valid as previous ones you have picked? Have you just played ball with the park to gain an event?
|

|
For anyone who is interested in finding out a bit more about the charity please take a look at the website http://www.jdrf.org.uk
There is a lot of useful information in the About Me section
| Quote: | | Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation exists to find the cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications, and is the world's largest charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research. JDRF raises money to drive world-class research to prevent, treat and cure type 1 diabetes and its serious and debilitating complications |

OMG, shocking
I think its always easy for people to moan about these events who perhaps dont understand the hard work that goes into organising these events etc.
Anyone who goes out of their way and donates their own personal time to organising and raising money for 'any' charity deserves respect and admiration.
Well done Andy and keep up the good work
|

Hi Andy,
I think what you are doing to raise money and awareness for this charity is admirable of you and anybody who thinks otherwise is missing the point entirely.
|

Thanks for the website Bunnie. Just one fact that I found suprising was:
"About 350,000 people in the UK alone are affected by type 1 diabetes, 20,000 of them are children. It is a leading cause of kidney failure, adult blindness, stroke, heart attacks and nerve damage leading to amputation"
Again Andy another worthwhile cause.
|
coasterprince
|
Cheers Guys,
The charity is the charity that Drayton Manor support, you may remember that they had a fun run around the park when we were there for Loopy. I choose to support charities that some times do not get into the main stream spotlight so not a lot of people know about it.
As mentioned there are 3 events in 2009 for this charity. If you feel that that you wish to support this charity then drop me a line.
If you do not feel this charity deserve your support then that means there are more seats for the ones who do. We will make the 2009 events the biggest so far.
Just a footer the reason we have 3 events next year is because the parks had heard about what we do. So that is very encouraging.
|
coasterprince
|
Steve you say I am just playing ball to get an event?
1) Drayton asked me if we could support their charity, they did not require me too, so it was my choice.
2) It was chosen as it is a worthwhile charity that support the research in the condition,
3) I know children that suffer from this. So you cannot tell me this is not a deserving charity.
|
Steven Burns
|
Was what i said SHOCKING? I don`t think so. I really stated i feel the charity is not a valid one in my opinion. I don`t see it as a worthwhile charity, unlike the previous ones you chose. That's all. I never disrespected your work. I still feel its a charity which is not as worthy as many others. Diabetes, which i have been told i need a test for myself, is funded by the NHS. Plus no matter what stage you are at, you will need a lifetime of help. It will always be NHS funded. End of. Where as other illnesses don`t receive the same level of help.
I stand by what i said. I loved the Oakwood event and was a pleasure to take part in it.

I would just like to take the opportunity to reiterate what has already been said with regards to supporting the charity and commenting that surely any charity is worthwhile in donating time and money to.
It is all too easy to turn a blind eye to these things and think they are being dealt with by someone else. I think that the point of this charities ethics are being misunderstood.
The reason I posted the link to the website is that it provides some valuable information with regard to the work that the charity do, in providing funding for research and as a support network. It does make for an interesting read.
I have watched a juvenile family member suffer with diabetes with little or no help from the NHS whatsoever other than medication for the rest of their life, therefore I am of the opinion that this charity is of a worthwhile cause.
Over the years we have been doing the charity events we have supported SANE, Cancer Research UK, NSPCC, Lupus and Muscular Dystrophy. Some of the people participating or supporting these events had their lives touched in some way by one of these conditions and I am sure will also be the case with juvenile diabetes.
Steve, if you are truly passionate that this charity are not as deserving as others, then that is your opinion and you are entitled to it. No one is forcing you to donate or participate in the events if you don't believe in the cause.
However we do believe in the cause and it is our opinion that the charity needs our support.

Not to get entangled in the debate of if diabetes charity is worth while or not and who funds it. I do have a few points I wish to add.
I have asked coasterprince if I can be added to the charity event at Drayton, no response from him as yet.
I have a father in law who has had diabetes nearly all his life and in his day there was no research no understanding of the illness. He was given a life expectancy of 50 yrs he is in his 70 now.
The people who know this illness is the ones who have it. We need the research this day in age to find a better quality of living for young people to control and live a life with this illness. I think it is more of a illness than cancer, not knocking how bad cancer is. Diabetes means any cut or injury can result in septicemia a longer healing time loss of limbs and so much more.
Just my thought and not in anyway to make a point to anyone just my thought on this charity that has been chosen. And I would still love to do Drayton Manor please coasterprince.

Hi everyone,
It's now just over 10 days until a number of us ride Megafobia all day for charity. On Sunday May 10th, myself and my intrepid colleagues will be at Oakwood rasing money for Great Ormond Street Hospital. This will be my first foray into charity riding and I will be joining some seasoned riders for the day who will hopefully guide me.
Amazing things happen at Great Ormond Street Hospital every day and the money raised is crucial in helping them continue with this great work. By sponsoring us you are helping to pay for more life-saving equipment for children who are critically ill, more beds so parents can be close to their children, and more ground-breaking research to give sick children a brighter future. For many families and children the hospital is a place of hope. With your help it can continue to give the very best care to these remarkable children.
They have to raise £50 million every year to make this happen
If you would like to support me it's easy to donate online by credit or debit card - just go to my Justgiving page:
http://www.justgiving.com/kevintinson
Justgiving sends your donation straight to Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity (GOSHCC) and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you're a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more.
If you would like to support the other riders (Andrew Paterson, Mary Knight, Andy Wright, Rachel Paterson) I'm sure they would send their details if you PM them.
Supporting any one of us will get this deserving charity some well needed money
Many thanks for reading

I have used both 'Just giving' and Sponsor form as some people prefer the more conventional way, it doesn't matter as long as we are raising money and as you say every donation either big or small helps Great Ormond Street. My 5 year old daughter Cara is even digging into her money box and giving me £1 and this was without me asking her! And Amy my eldest daughter who is a student has even given me some of her hard earned money
So to all those of you out there who want to support a great cause, now is the time ........please
