http://www.xe.com/ucc/ is reporting that you can get circa $1.8 for every £1 so it's a pretty good time to exchange - It's come down a bit since the heady days of $2 -> £1 earlier this year.
But who know what could happen... You could exchange some now and look at the trend in the coming months...

I've also been wondering when would be a good time to cash in, but it's a very hard thing to judge. Luckily I still have quite a bit left over from last year as a starter (I left the casino $41 up).
The latter part of the trip will be in Canada and google suggests some places accept the US dollar and some don't. For larger purchases we can just use our cards.

Parts of Canada will accept US dollars, especially areas near the boarder like Niagara and Toronto. However it's not a fantastic rate of exchange so it's worth getting a few Canadian dollars to get snacks in the park and as Frosty says put main pruchases on your card.

Exchange rates can go up and down.
Who can say, you might well do well changing now, but you might miss out later.

With the current trend of the economy I was thinking the same as Adam about if I should buy now or wait. I hope waiting will not bite me hard but I still need to pay for the trip as well.

For those in a quandry, you could always change half your money now and if the rate goes down you wont have lost a lot. If the rate goes up you'll gain a little.
