Alton Towers plan new ride for 2013

Alton Towers have announced that they are looking into building "an only one of it's kind" ride for 2013.

Personally rather than a world first I would just be happy with a world class rollercoaster as since 1994 they have taken out good rides and replaced them with overrated lightweights imo.

Knowing Alton Towers we will be lucky to get an over hyped Go Gator that goes backwards.

Well at Loopathon 2006, we were told about the possibility of a wooden coaster appearing at Alton Towers in 2008.  Lo and behold, it didn't appear.  Instead the much hyped steel coaster Th13teen opened on the site of Corkscrew in 2010.

Any hope of the new ride promised for 2013 being a WOODEN roller coaster?  It's just what AT needs.  If they insist on another record breaker then simple - build it 200 feet tall, even if that means excavating 50 metres into the rock to ensure it doesn't exceed treetop height.  That will make it taller than Colossos (Heide-Park Soltau), and hence the tallest wooden coaster in Europe.

If they can't manage that, build it 100 feet tall, to exceed the height of Megafobia (85 feet), and hence be the tallest woodie in Britain.  Surely they could manage that if it meant excavating a cutting to put the base 50 feet below ground.

Absolutely no hope of it being a woodie I am afraid  Sad

Below is a quote from the Pleasure Beach Experience forum when I asked the question about why is there a lack of woodies in the UK.

"At the Th13teen behind the scenes evening last year, someone asked a question about the possibility of Alton Towers getting a woodie (one was planned for the valley at some stage). The answer was that woodies don't perform well in market research compared to steelies, and as any investment by Merlin has to have a proven return on investment they won't build one unless research shows it will be a success. Apparently the perception is that they're unsafe."

We all know that it is a complete load of rubbish but if that's the attitude of the major player in the UK theme park industry then we are in for a very long wait for the next new UK woodie  Evil or Very Mad

Alton Towers said about 20 years ago wait and you will get wood, tis was from John Wardley. We are still waiting. I think the UK do's need new wooden coaster but I don't see any park like Alton or Thorpe for that mater getting one. This wil probably be a generic out of the box coaster and made like 13 with hype.I will just wait for it to be built or plans to be found to see what it is.

Could be a wooden coaster with a drop like 13  Laughing

They might actually go for a 15ft drop rather than a 10ft one this time  Laughing

I have never heard of a stand up inverted woodie, although there was talk of Alton getting a woodie some time ago, but this time is it is not a woodie.

Which is why Alton might get one, as it'll be a World's 1st. A lay down (flying) wooden coaster has already been done, so Alton would have to do something like an inverted stand up woodie if they want to be first.

As for the cross valley wooden coaster they had planned, I was lucky enough to be shown the plans and a No Limits video of what it would have been like. It looked rubbish and very dull. Basically a big drop, then up, then round a carousel helix, big drop, then up and into the station. It would have had teh record for the biggest drop on a wooden coaster but it wouldn't have been that exciting an over all ride. Think a wooden equivalent of Oblivion.

Thank goodness it was never built then and I say that as a woodie fan.

I get the feeling that Nemesis is going to rein supreme at Alton Towers for many years yet, which for our so called premier park is pretty poor really.
