Alton towers 2009Some more Alton towers news for 2009.
News of a Sea Life Aquarium at Alton Towers broke in the Summer of 2008, but details were sketchy. However, local press are now reporting certain details about the attraction.
The name has been confirmed as "Sharkbait Reef" and will feature a Pirate theme as guests explore an underwater shipwreck and touching pool. Displays curator Tony Barlow has claimed this will "the best in the country", although such a statement seems very bold given that this will be a relatively small scale Aquarium. Nevertheless, hopes are high that Alton Towers will deliver another well themed attraction, after the 2008 debut of Battle Galleons.
The Aquarium will create 25 new jobs, have 300 species of fish, 100 million litres of water and feature a 10-metre walkthrough tunnel. It will open to the public on March 28th.
Cred Street will receive a breath of fresh air for 2009 as it is re-named "Cloud Cuckoo Land". It is believed the work will include a new paint scheme, new shows, new theming and new characters along with the re-located Ug Swinger (which will be re-named accordingly). This area will also open on March 28th.
The Katanga Canyon KFC/Pizza Hut Express takeaway has long been a feature of the African-themed area at Alton Towers. However, it came to light towards the end of the 2008 season, that the parks relationship with KFC and Pizza Hut was coming to an end.
Whilst the future of the Meltdown unit in X-Sector remains unclear, the Katanga Canyon outlet, which Towers Times believes has been stripped inside, is to be rebranded to a Pizza & Pasta buffet, likely to be named "Explorers".
This new outlet will feature a Colonial African theme, with an Open kitchen where fresh pizza and pasta will be prepared. The restaurant will have seating for over 300 guests and is likely to be priced around the £7 per adult mark, making it competitive with the other Alton Towers operated restaurants around the park.
It is hoped that the opening of this outlet will further improve the quality and diversity of catering outlets at the park, which has seen a massive overhaul since the early part of the decade.
