NYC council votes over Coney Island renewal
NEW YORK (AP) — The future of Coney Island is in the hands of New York politicians.
The City Council is expected to vote Wednesday afternoon on a redevelopment plan for the Brooklyn beachfront.
Under the plan, the area would be transformed into a year-round entertainment complex. Coney Island would get a new amusement park, high-rise hotels, restaurants, movie theaters and the city's first new rollercoaster since 1927.
But community activists say the plan could rob Coney Island of its nostalgia.
The landmarked Cyclone will stay. But there's a battle over land between two billionaires, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and developer Joseph Sitt.
Even if the Council backs the plan championed by Bloomberg, the city still has to convince Sitt to sell his chunk of land in the amusement area. _________________ Andy Hine is also known as NEV!
